Who’s pulling the strings?

We know who the puppets are, but the big question is, “Who’s pulling the puppet’s strings?” With a remarkable number of whistle-blowers, this Century has gotten off to a very inauspicious start. The “Bush Years” didn’t seem to spawn very many of these leakers. During Obama’s reign, however, the leaks seem to be coming at a fast and furious rate. When a rash of these occurrences happen back to back to back, you have to put some distance between yourself and the events. Only then can you have a shot at seeing the big picture. Without much effort you can begin to notice possible patterns of what appear to be irrational, illogical situations. You start having some “Ah-Ha” moments, as you look at the time-lines and the events as a continuum of some sinister plot. We’re not talking James Bond, The Bourne Identity, or Maxwell Smart. But, at some point, you have to ask yourself, “What the Hell is going on here?”

Since 2008, there has been a truck load of stupidity emanating from Washington, DC. I stopped counting how many times the House of Representatives voted to strike down the Affordable Health Care Act. I stopped counting out of sheer disgust for our body Politic. There was this little thing they called the “Fiscal Cliff” which went the way of the old “Y2k” scare. The President still hasn’t been allowed to fill over half the open judicial positions in the Federal Court system; they have to be voted in by Congress. Guantanamo Bay Penitentiary is still in business for absolutely no reason. We pulled out of Iraq, beefed up our presence in Afghanistan, and, now, we’re taking a serious look at Syria. We’re repeating events that aren’t even history, yet. The U.S. Congress doesn’t consider the fact that the Country is still in an Economic Depression, so they won’t vote for any job creating stimulus Bills; I think the Democrats have simply thrown up their hands and walked away from that effort. Apparently the Country doesn’t need any Abortion Clinics, or Doctors who are willing to provide that service. And, while we’re at it, let’s make damn sure Women continue to make sizably less money for performing the same job as a man. By denying the LGBT Community their Civil Rights, are we upholding the Biblical rendition of marriage? Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot that over 50% of “traditional” Biblical marriages end in divorce, but, dear God, don’t let that stand in your way when voting for the Defense of Marriage Act. Do I remember correctly that someone put together a Bill that would require the sellers of lethal weapons to run background checks on their buyers? Silly me. What chance would a Bill like that have in our wonderful, upstanding, and worthy Congress?

So, you see, it’s not just the whistle-blowers making all the noise. Our Elected Officials are off drumming to a different tune, also. If I was looking at a period of time that spanned decades, perhaps none of this would be cause for concern. But, all this, and more, and in such rapid succession has lead me to believe that "something’s rotten in Denmark"; so the saying goes. The question I keep coming back to is, “Who’s pulling the strings?”

Who is this man who would be King?

Who is Willard Mitt Romney? Does anyone really understand his complexity, his mindset, his vision of America?

One part of his life should tell you just about all you need to know in order to answer the above questions. Start with his education. He was afforded a coveted Private School education right from the start. This was of his Parents choosing, not his. By and large, Private School education is a very auspicious way to kick off your journey through writing, reading, arithmetic, etc.

I speak of some knowledge on this subject, as I too had a Private School education, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. If I had to point to a couple of benefits derived from a Private School education, I would have to point at writing and arithmetic. These two curricula have served me well over the years, and I can look back fondly at the Teachers who toiled endlessly with me.

There are a few aspects of Private School that I wish I had not experienced. Mr. Romney certainly experienced these areas as he wended his way through the educational maze. From grades 1-8, things tend to be both reasonably comfortable and acceptably challenging. Then puberty sets in, and you find yourself in a highly competitive environment. Grades 9-12 are probably the toughest years of a young man’s education. If you don’t make the cut, you are summarily tarred, feathered, and rode out of town. It takes a special quality to make it through these years unscathed by the hate, the bullying, the constant reminder that you aren’t quite good enough.

If you are able to make it through grade 12 in the Private sector, you are then expected to continue your journey at a prestigious place of higher learning. Is this the “College of your choice”? No, it is the college of your Parents choice, just as the previous 12-13 years of your education. When your Father happens to have been a State Governor, and a highly successful CEO of an American Automobile Company, you say “how high?” when he says “Jump!” This is what the 1% do, and they tend to do it very well.

Not unlike myself, Mr. Romney experienced some “take-a-ways” from his education that served him well over the years. He learned discipline from his education, and his Religion. He learned the values and lessons of how to run a business. He has certainly exhibited both these qualities in his adult life.

There is a subtle nuance that you inherit from going to just the “right” schools. It is a sense of arrogance and privilege. It makes certain you show distain for anyone less fortunate than yourself. {case in point: all the Kennedy brats} The longer you are allowed to openly exhibit these traits, the more firmly cemented they become in your psyche, and it literally oozes out of your pores.

When Mr. Romney gets his “grin” (smirk) on, it is not a sign of any particular prejudice. It is an ingrained reaction to someone who doesn’t see life as he does. He holds these people in utter disdain for not having the knowledge base he was afforded as a child. He holds these people in utter distain for not belonging to the “right” Country Clubs; for not living in the “right” neighborhoods; for not socializing with all the “right” people. Mr. Romney really thinks he is a better person than you and I, and he makes no bones about it.

I don’t know if the time is right for someone the likes of Willard Mitt Romney. In a better, more normal, economy he might be a good fit, but coming out of a modern day depression, I think the Country should take a pass on electing him to the highest office in the Land.

Please, tell me one more time, “who am I voting for?”

   It never ceases to amaze me that the Republican Party keeps dishing up complete dunderheads for the main feast. There has been only one Republican, in my lifetime, who had the National Interest as his number one priority. Dwight Eisenhower saw things as they were and called them as such. He didn’t offer any “spin” to make himself and his administration look good. He didn’t run hateful re-election campaigns. He never had to. Did he make some mistakes as President? He certainly did, and, when he made them, he owned them  immediately and shouldered the consequences. One of those mistakes was allowing the Republican Party to push Richard Nixon into the Vice Presidency. Between Richard Nixon, John Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson, we spanned three decades of dishonesty and deceit in the White House (Executive Branch), much to the detriment of this Country.

   By the Nineteen-Seventies, we were being fed a constant stream of “choices” that started the downward spiral that has led us to this point; a point of almost no return. The Democrats offered us Jimmy Carter. He knew a thing or two about peanuts, but he didn’t know peanuts about running a Nation. The Republicans then chimed in the Nineteen-Eighties with Ronald Reagan. He talked the talk, but his wife Nancy who seemed to be at the helm, more often than not. The Republicans kept the ball rolling with someone who thought we could all lip read, and also see his thousand points of light. No, it wasn’t Merlin the Magician. It was George Herbert Walker Bush.

   The Nineteen-Nineties brought us an era that saw our Federal Government go from the red into the black with another Democrat; William “Slick Willie” Clinton. It helps to remember that the Federal Government does not deal in actual dollars and cents. All their “economics” boil down to an incredible number of Accountants writing numbers on pieces of paper. There is no hard currency to back those numbers up. Given that, I now realize how one might be able to cook the books just the right way to “create” a surplus of funds in our National Treasury. Isn’t it a bit odd the way that surplus disappeared overnight?  And, how about that North American Free Trade Agreement? Our manufacturing base started running for the borders, as the rest of the industrialized world looked on in amazement. They all wanted to ride the Gravy Train that was the pillar of our National structure. Slowly, but surely, they did.

   Along came good old “Y-2-K”. The computers didn’t crash. Our ability to manufacture goods and services started hemorrhaging from every corner of the Country. We were blessed by the Republicans with the second coming of the Bush family. As “Rome” burned for eight wonderful years, George “the Big W” Bush put his feet up in the Oval Office, and fiddled away as one of our favorite “Dicks” ran things from behind the curtain. By the year two thousand and eight, we all know where that got us. Then the Democrats offered us an unusual man. He was a man, tall and lanky in stature, who had the ability to talk to large groups of citizens and give them some hope for a better future. Barak Hussein Obama has had four years now to right the ship of state. He has met with some pretty stiff odds while managing to have an impressive “legislative” record. He has been able to invoke “Executive Power” to enact some of the most sweeping Social, Military, Financial, and International changes this Country has seen since the Equal Rights Movement of the Nineteen-Sixties. This man took the proverbial lemons of a modern day Depression, and turned them into lemon-aide in four short  years. If, indeed, he gets another four years to ply his trade, we stand a very good chance of recovering what we lost in the first decade of the Twenty-First Century, and be back on our way to Peace and Prosperity.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

work  well, benefit most, and are not in need of repair. Those items that are in need of some remediation are not complicated, and can be fixed by logic, rationale, and simplicity. Please do not believe politicians, lawyers, captains of industry, and their spin-doctors. The aforementioned group does truly speak with “forked” tongue. A culture of outright deceit is their “company line, so don’t buy into anything this company says, and challenge them at every turn.

   Don’t get me wrong, the “items that ain’t broke” still are in need of some attention. A legally enforceable bi-annual audit of each Department, large or small, might be a way of reigning in the inefficiencies that drive up their cost of doing business. This is not rocket science; even a caveman could do it. Okay, maybe the Inspector General’s Office.

    Items  needin’ a fix have to undergo major reorganization, if not a total disembowelment, and State funeral. Another fix that is necessary is not a financial one; it is an n organizational and managerial one. The financial benefits will naturally follow. The Legislative and Executive branches would be greatly served by the introduction of permanent auditors, with enforcement capabilities backed by the Attorney General and the Supreme Court. All audits need to be consistent with the Constitution of the United States.

§ U. S. Senate, term limits, maximum of 2 terms (12 years)

§ U. S  House of Representatives, term limits, maximum of 4   terms (8 years)

§ Department of Education, merge into Department of the Interior, cut size by 90%, major responsibility to the States who already have their own structure for education

§ Department of Energy, discontinue, fold into Department of the Interior

§ Department of Agriculture, discontinue, fold into Department of the Interior

§ Department of the Interior, this will house all other domestic departments and agencies, non-defense only

§ Department of Homeland Security, discontinue, the F. B. I. and the C. I. A. make this department redundant

§ Department of Defense, bulldoze the Pentagon, cut budget by 50%, cut non-combat personnel by 80%

§ The War on (name), do away with the War on anything, we don’t need them, they don’t work

    By shrinking and decentralizing the Federal Government, a more beneficial balance will be struck between the States and the Federal Government. The vast amounts of money we send to Washington, D. C. will remain with Local and State Governments, who tend to spend tax dollars more efficiently. The Federal Government needs the scale and efficiencies that amore business-like structure and culture will bring. Being a “government”, it should be built with a “not-for-profit model in mind.

    Just for the record, abortion is not an issue that has any logical, rational basis in any form of government. Abortion is strictly a woman’s choice. There certainly is an argument when regarding religion. Whatever the case, government neither condones, condemns, or pays for abortion. Politicians need to cease and desist from any involvement and speech concerning a woman’s right to decide any and all questions relating to their bodies. Be careful! Women are the only reason life, as we know it, exists. Do not piss them off.

    In conclusion, I can’t talk about restructuring government without a shout out to corporate America. American corporate culture needs a swift kick in the butt. “Occupy Wall Street” has given us the model for forcing some changes in this arena. It never ceases to amaze me why the American public allows corporations to literally stash their profits overseas and use their phantom loses to negate any domestic tax liability. If corporations that store their money outside this Country, thus avoiding taxation, brought those monies back on-shore, the Federal deficit could be cut in half. That new number could be cut in half, again, if the upper 2% of wealth-holders paid taxes commensurate with their wealth. Rewriting or tax codes could make the remainder disappear overnight. Couple this with a drastic re-engineering of the Federal Government, and our Nation would be back in the black

Welcomed to the theater of the absurd!

I don’t  really care who’s in charge here, but the issuance of million dollar (+) bonuses at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is the last straw. These two corporations have been sucking America dry for years. Fannie and Freddie’s management has systematically purchased so much debt ( ie. Toxic Assets) that they are now totally broke. And, now we bail them out with billions more of our money, only to see the CEO’s of these two entities earn $900,000.00 a year; and they EXPECT to receive bonuses. Come on….really?

Do you expect the average “Joe”  to be at all sympathetic towards anyone making that kind of money, even without a bonus? Are these ‘HMFC’s unable to live on their annual salaries? To receive even $1.00 in bonus money is tantamount to treason, especially considering the shape of our socio-economic reality.

The President of the United States makes $400,000.00 and lives just fine on that. The ambulance chasers we like to call Congressmen/women and Senators receive around $200,000.00 a year for their labors ( not including the money they get from ‘big business’), and they live just fine on that amount.

 Does anyone expect me to believe that $900,000.00 simply doesn’t cut the mustard anymore? (Don’t get me started on professional athletes.) Who is granting them these exorbitant amounts? The main stream media certainly isn’t telling us who “they” are. So, once again, its up to We The People to dig through the trash and find out who the Hell is rubber-stamping these pay scales.

If some one doesn’t go to jail for the likes of this, then the peaceful demonstrations of  the “OWS” crowd will seem very mild to what happens next. I, for one, hope to be around to witness that next chapter.

P.S.:  Since when was anything called “toxic” considered an ‘asset’?

Sharing our own moments in history is real.  It’s humbling. I remember a moment I had back in late July when I was sitting in my spacious office down on K Street.  I had just taken a call from yet another Member of Congress, asking me to raise him $25,000. My initial reaction was to smile and reflect on simpler but poorer times when I was a Senate staffer; $25,000 a year!

I spent almost seven years, the best years of my life by the way, doing policy in the Senate and I take great pride in my public service. Back then I did what was natural: I became a lobbyist, with the hopes of continuing my economic policy expertise from the outside. Key word here: policy.

But here's the rub: lobbyists today rarely get to use the policy they learned in the halls of Congress.  Instead they are forced to spend a majority of their time raising money and shuffling from cocktail reception to cocktail reception.

The "fundraising circuit" is deafening.  It's sick and it makes me nauseous to think of having to write check after check after check to a Senator or Representative just so I can get a meeting with him or her later.  Anyone that tells you that's not true is flat out lying to you.

So, back to my "moment in history." It began at my desk.   A physical chill came over my body. The smile of "making it" as one of the top lobbyists (apparently the Wall Street Journal thought so!) in Washington turned into something different.

That's when it hit me.  That's when I knew I had to stop.  I had two choices, be a cog in the wheel or destroy the wheel. I literally shuttered at the thought of losing everything I'd ever worked for: my home, my ability to travel, to live a life of luxury, to provide for my family, etc. I left my lobbying firm and bunkered down on an island for the month of August and did some major soul searching.

Skip a couple of months forward and a new door opened: my friend Dylan Ratigan approached me to lead the Get Money Out Foundation.  Great offer but I needed a sounding board, so I picked up the phone and called my brother Robert down in South Carolina.  What I heard in my brother's voice was this theme that Washington, DC isn’t just broken but corrupt. He confirmed what I suspected: that the country at worst hates its capitol and at best thinks our politicians have no clue about what it means to live outside the echo chamber known as the Beltway.

My brother and I couldn't be more different; He's a Republican, I’m a democrat.  He's straight, I’m gay, he's reserved and more cautious, yet I was the kid in the family that threw it all out there.  But there’s not a single person in this world whom I love or trust more than my brother, and when he tells me the country's pissed off at Washington, I knew I had to do this.

Robert asked me how I was going to make Washington wake up and give up its power; what's the strategy, he said.  Here's what I told him:

First, Get Money Out will debate openly and with the public's input. We’ll write the best Constitutional Amendment possible and put it forward to the people.  We wont always agree but if you have something to say, I’ll listen.

Second, we will take the best amendment language to Congress and find allies to introduce it for debate.  Do I expect Congress to debate this immediately? I’m not that naive but that’s where you come in.

Third, I need a wave.  As I write this, we know we have nearly 220,000 followers who believe in this mission.  We need more.  We need MANY more.   I wont be satisfied until we reach 2 million or more.  Why? Because Congress won’t listen unless the wave overtakes them.  I've said it before: Congress doesn't pro-act, Congress only reacts.  This is where you come in. We need your help (and your friends and family’s help) to get Congress to react.  Lets build a wave so big they can’t ignore by exposing the auction for this "government to the highest bidder" mentality for what it is: corruption through and through.

Fourth, if we can get Congress to pass a Constitutional Amendment, then we turn our focus to the states, which have to ratify it to actually make it law.

Campaign finance reform isn't a new idea.  Congress has passed reform measure after reform measure.  Yet, the Supreme Court continues to insist that corporations are people and that money is speech. I just don't agree.  I don't think the Tea Party movement agrees. And I definitely don't think the Occupy Wall Street movement agrees that Exxon is a person.  What we all agree on is the system is broken, that Washington DC is nothing more than an auction house, with the highest bidder always winning.

There are others out there spearheading similar movements, many with good intentions. There are many roads to Rome.  Some want to take the back-roads, some want to take the interstate. In the end, if we all want to reach Rome and agree on the same goal, to Get Money Out of Politics, then I don't care how everyone gets there.  I just care that we all make it to the finish line and pass an amendment banning money in the halls of Congress.

That’s the strategy for the Get Money Out Foundation.  Its simple, its concise, and its honest.  We don’t need to complicate a solution to something so inherently and blatantly wrong.

As the executive director of the Get Money Out Foundation, I give you my word (and my word is all I have in this world) that I will run this movement to ban money in politics as openly, honestly, and transparently as I possibly can.  With your help, we will reach Rome.

Lets get money out and give America its government back.

2012 is going to be a party year!

Listed below are some folks worth watching, listening to, and considering in the 2012 Presidential campaign. Unfortunately, you won’t get to see, or hear, from most of the Republicans on this list. The reason for that is they make too much sense for the main stream media to understand. John Huntsman and Herman Cain are the only two, so far, being showcased by the Republican establishment. The only Democrat you hear from is, obviously, Barack Obama.

In my opinion, these are the only folks willing to take the abuse of running for public office who actually have plans, with facts and figures, as to how they want to this Country to proceed. Are they all correct in everything they propose? Of course they aren’t. They are, however, passionate about their positions. If we the people could just figure out away to get them out from under the control of big business and high finance, we could recover from the mess we’re in and avoid the long fall into the dark abyss of failed societies.

The “War on Terror’ was not meant to be an exercise in nation building. It had definite targets in mind, and those targets have, by in large, been achieved. It certainly appears that the “War on Terror” has met most, if not all of its, goals. At this point in time, it is public knowledge that they do not want us there and we do not want to be there. In this time of extraordinary financial stress on our economy, it is logical that we make every effort to strengthen our own economy. Spending hundreds of billions of our tax dollars in a quasi-colonial endeavor simply does not make sense. To that end, we offer the following petition from we the People of the United States of America.

Petition:

We stand with the people of the sovereign nations of Iraq, Afghanistan, & Pakistan.

We stand against interference in other sovereign nations affairs.

We stand against “Nation Building” in our image.

We reject the premise that these nations will collapse in turmoil and regain their stature as a major threat to the United States of America,

We implore the congress of the United States of America to end this armed conflict, and cease our military presence in Persia, as soon as possible.

We demand a full review of the War Powers Act to restrict its use and enforce its limits, as it was first intended.

We demand that Congress, by simple majority, vote to establish resolution for any future armed conflict.

We demand that Congress cease and desist funding future Executive requests for funding armed conflicts without a majority vote of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
